MGRID Portal How-To

Upload and Download Your Files Into and Out of MGRID

[ Upload ]

Most jobs require input files and produce output files. These need to be on the grid and available to the program when it runs. The portal can be used to upload (copy files from your host to MGRID) and download (copy files from MGRID to your host) files. To upload a file, click on "MGRID Upload/Download" and fill in the dialog with the file name, substituting a file that exists on your machine for "myfile", and then click the "Upload" button:

NFS File Upload

[ Notes ]

The "Host name" refers to the head node of the cluster from which you wish to execute your programs.
Clicking the "Browse" button tells your web browser to browse your own host's file system for a file to upload.
"Local File to upload" is the name of the file on your computer.
Checking "Decompress file after upload?" will cause the file to be "unzipped" after it is uploaded. This is useful when you wish to upload many files, because it is more convenient than manually specifying each one.
The execute permission bit on the files will be turned off after they are uploaded. Please contact the MGRID staff if you need to upload an executable file.

[ Download ]

The following dialog (lower portion of the upload/download screen) is for copying files from MGRID to your host:

NFS File Download

In the above example, the single file "myoutput" is selected for download. Click "Download File(s)" to indicate your selections are complete. You will then be presented with the following dialog.

MGRID Upload/Download

In the above dialog, clicking on the link "chi.grid.umich.edu.zip" will tell your browser to download the compressed file. To continue, follow your browser's instructions for downloading files.

[ Notes ]

The "Host name" refers to the head node of the cluster from which you wish to execute your programs.
Clicking the "Change Host" button will refresh the file list below. Click this if you have changed "Host Name".
"Remote file(s) to download" are the names of the file on the remote host. Each of them has a corresponding check box to select them for downloading or deletion.
Clicking the "Download File(s)" button will download all the selected files to your host computer. They will be compressed and put into a single file named with the host name appended with ".zip". For the host shown, the file will be named "chi.grid.umich.edu.zip". After the download completes, you must unzip this file.
Clicking on the "Return to Upload/Download form" will abort the download.
The "Delete File(s)" button is provided for keeping your directory on the remote system uncluttered. To delete files, select those you wish to delete and then click "Delete File(s)". Note that this will irreversibly delete the files on the remote host. To reduce the chance of accidental file removal, you will be presented with the following confirmation dialog before files are delete:
